Dominating the CITY
I tuned in to today’s Columbus City League Girls Championship game at East High School. A rare historical moment happened with both the girls and boys game (next weekend) feature the same team. Beechcroft came in undefeated including an upset win over the division favorite Northland a couple of weeks ago while Africentric came in at 6-2 with losses to Pickerington Central and state-ranked Dublin Coffman since starting their season. This is Africentric’s 6th straight trip to the City League Title Game. Early on Africentric scores the first 6 points led by their defense and unforced turnovers by the Cougars. They were able to rally and got within 8-6 but then thanks to great suffocating defense aned great looks in transition closed the quarter on a 13-0 run to lead 21-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter was more of the same as the Cougars could never really get going offensively and when they would get a shot off they weren't able to connect. Africentric’s pressure defense led to turnovers by Beechcroft which resulted ineasy run-outs in transition and easy baskets. The Lady Nubians would outscore the cougars 21-5 to lead 42-11 at the half. The 3rd quarter did see the Cougars get some good looks and knock them down but the Nubians were able to limit those with their pressure defense. They led at the end of the 3rd quarter 57-17. The final quarter was really a quarter of domination by Africentric as they were able to turn the cougars over for easy baskets and never really allowed the Cougars to get any momentum offensively. The Nubians won their 6th straight City League Championship in convincing fashion by the score 76-19. With the win Africentric improves to 6-2 while Beechcroft suffers their 1st loss of the season and drops to 6-1.
